Canadian Cashmere

The average lifespan for a cashmere goat is 10-12 years.
Gestation is 150 days at which time birth is given to a baby called a kid. Twins and are not unusual

Cashmere goats have been bred in Central Europe for hundreds of years.
Europeans “discovered” the fiber.

To this day cashmere remains the ultimate in luxury fiber.

Cashmere comes from a Goat.

. The fiber is so extraordinary & expensive one ,it should come from some wild exotic creature.

Cashmere is very fine in texture yet it is strong, light and warm. Unlike other wools or fibers the cashmere goat does not have to be sheared, the cashmere is plucked or brushed as it begins to shed in early to mid May.

The fact that each goat only produces 3-4 ounces of fiber a year continues to make Cashmere very expensive.

Spanish Meat Goats are bred mainly for meat, but many are bred for their fibre also . The fine down undercoat of these goats is called cashmere, hence, Spanish Meat Goats may also be known as Cashmere Goats.

The fibre grows during the winter to keep the goat warm, and is shed in the very early spring. It is collected by brushing or shearing before it starts to shed naturally. Cashmere is one of the world's most luxurious and expensive fibres; therefore, it is quite marketable.

Spanish Meat Goats are relatively new to Canada .

These herds had started from goats that had gone wild or "feral". Goats from Spain were originally brought into the southern US and Mexico by the Spanish invaders, and although the original Spanish goats were probably black in colour, they interbred with escaped dairy breeds imported by the early settlers, to produce goats of all colours, e.g. brown, red, white, paint, and spotted, as well as black.

CHARACTERISTICS

Spanish meat goats are shorter, stockier, and more heavily muscled than are the dairy breeds. They are very hardy and breed and birth easily.

They have higher set, smaller, udders so  they have ample milk for their offspring.

They usually have twins, except for the first birthing, when they may only have a single kid.

Young does are usually not bred until they are at least eight months old, although it is possible, but not desirable to breed them sooner. We wait till the does are at least 2yrs old.

Females weigh from 100 to 125 pounds when they are adults, and males can weigh up to 250 pounds.
The bucks have "handlebar" horns, similar to those of an Angora goat.
In fact out Cashmere Buck , Elo, is over 200lbs.
And yes, they can
